|
(pub. Chappell) |
|
| |
(this excerpt: 40 seconds) |
|
|
This is one of the great radio classics of the 1950s, featured
regularly on the BBC Light Programme, and one of a vast number
of successful pieces by this very popular Canadian composer.
Its jaunty rhythm and colourful harmonies make it quite irresistible! |

‘SICILIANO’ by Harry
Dexter |
(pub. Francis Day and Hunter)
|
|
| |
(this excerpt: 40 seconds) |
|
|
Another great radio classic by a composer who became a leading
figure in the light music movement in 1956 when he founded the
Light Music Society. This is probably his best-known piece,
a gentle lilting melody based on the old Italian ‘Siciliano’ dance. |

‘LITTLE SERENADE’
by Ernest Tomlinson |
(pub. Fred Benson) |
|
| |
(this excerpt: 50 seconds) |
|
|
Ernest Tomlinson is the current Chairman of the Light Music
Society, and undoubtedly one of the doyens of British light
music. ‘Little Serenade’ began life as part of the
‘Cinderella’ story, but this wonderful melody developed
its own identity and popularity in the early 1960s. |

‘EN BATEAU’ (‘In
a Boat’) from ‘Petite Suite’ by Claude Debussy |
|
| |
(this excerpt: 41 seconds) |
|
|
The mix of music in a fourtune concert
includes some of the finest miniatures from the world of classical
music. Here is a wonderful example - evocative picture-painting
in music by this great French composer, with much of the melody
on the solo flute. |

‘MARCH’ from ‘A
Little Suite’
(BBC TV ‘Dr. Finlay’s Casebook’ signature tune) by Trevor Duncan |
|
|
| |
(pub. Boosey and Hawkes) (this excerpt:
54 seconds) |
|
|
One of the most popular television series of the 1960s, the
memorable theme tune still conjures up the life and adventures
of the people of Tannochbrae (actually the Scottish town of
Callander) in the minds of those who remember the programme. |
